Liriodendron tulipifera, a magnolia relative and not a true poplar (Populus), growing from southern Ontario through the eastern and central United States to the Gulf Coast; white sapwood against a cream to tan heartwood that is often streaked greenish brown, dark green, purple, blue or black by mineral uptake, straight-grained and uniform in texture, with the colours darkening on exposure to light.
