Pterocarpus spp. — a genus of roughly 37 species across the tropics, so “padauk” covers at least two different woods: African padauk (P. soyauxii), a vivid reddish orange when cut that darkens substantially to reddish or purplish brown, and Burmese padauk (P. macrocarpus), less red and running pale golden yellow to reddish brown over distinct yellow sapwood.
