The Wood Key
Pyrus communis, the orchard pear, native from Europe to northern Iraq and planted well beyond it; heartwood a pale pink to light reddish brown that the sapwood barely differs from, fine and uniform in texture, and often steamed to deepen the pink — the timber trade's name for it is “Swiss pear”, which describes the treatment rather than an origin.
