The Wood Key
Agathis australis, endemic to the northern North Island of New Zealand; pale yellowish white to golden brown with sapwood barely distinguishable from heartwood, straight-grained and fine-textured, often with the shimmering figure known there as “whitebait” — ancient or swamp kauri is the same species, subfossil logs recovered from bogs, not a separate tree.
