The Wood Key

Derbyshire Sycamore

Acer pseudoplatanus · hardwood · in the Other Hardwood family

Acer pseudoplatanus, native from Europe east to the western Caucasus and not native to Britain at all — Derbyshire names an English provenance, not a variety — and it is the sapwood that is used: near white to light golden or reddish brown, fine and even in texture, straight to wavy in grain and sometimes curly or quilted; British “sycamore” is this maple, not the North American sycamore (Platanus).
