Brosimum guianense, ranging from southern Mexico through tropical South America though commercial supply comes almost entirely from coastal northeastern South America; reddish brown with contrasting dark brown to black speckles and hieroglyph-like markings — the source of the older trade name letterwood — with straight grain and a fine even texture.
