The Wood Key

Bois de Rose

Dalbergia maritima · hardwood · in the Rosewood family

Dalbergia maritima, from eastern Madagascar; a vivid magenta to reddish purple with darker violet-black streaks, darkening with age toward deep purple or near black — and the name collides, since “bois de rose” is also used for Aniba rosaeodora, the South American tree distilled for rosewood oil, and for Dalbergia decipularis, Brazilian tulipwood.
