The Wood Key
Diospyros virginiana, from the central and eastern United States; almost all of what gets cut is white to pale yellowish-brown sapwood that darkens with age, the dark brown to black heartwood forming only a narrow central core often under an inch across — it sits in Diospyros, the same genus as the tropical ebonies.
