Diospyros malabarica, native from the Indian subcontinent through Indo-China and the Malay archipelago though nearly all timber now entering the trade is cut in Laos; pale straw to creamy off-white carrying bold black streaks that vary unpredictably from board to board, with straight to wavy grain and a fine, even texture — also sold as black-and-white ebony.
