The Wood Key
Juglans hindsii, native to the Central Valley and inner north Coast Ranges of California; heartwood pale brown to dark chocolate with darker streaking and frequent grey, purple or reddish casts against a near-white sapwood — much lumber sold as claro is the rootstock trunk of orchard trees top-grafted with English walnut, so the most highly coloured material comes from around the graft union.
