Santa Cruz Guitar Company

Santa Cruz Guitar Company has built guitars in Santa Cruz, California since 1976, when Richard Hoover founded the shop to bring violin-lutherie traditions into acoustic guitar building. Each top is tap-tuned and voiced by hand in a strictly climate-controlled workshop. Its connection with Tony Rice — the Tony Rice Model evokes the pre-war Martin D-28 voice he was known for — anchored its reputation in bluegrass flatpicking, and over five decades the catalog has grown into a deep custom-shop operation where most builds are individually specified rather than spec-built.

Mighty Fine Guitars

In Lafayette, just east of the Bay, Mighty Fine Guitars keeps a deep, rotating bench of one-off luthier flat-tops — a consignment and used shop where a Somogyi or a Sexauer might sit beside a Klein & Kauffman, a Heiden, or a Wingert, with vintage Martin and Gibson nearby. The room leans toward the individual makers of the American steel-string revival more than the production names, though Collings, Bourgeois, and Santa Cruz round it out. It reads less like a catalog than a well-kept collection.
