Santa Cruz Guitar Company
Santa Cruz Guitar Company has built guitars in Santa Cruz, California since 1976, when Richard Hoover founded the shop to bring violin-lutherie traditions into acoustic guitar building. Each top is tap-tuned and voiced by hand in a strictly climate-controlled workshop. Its connection with Tony Rice — the Tony Rice Model evokes the pre-war Martin D-28 voice he was known for — anchored its reputation in bluegrass flatpicking, and over five decades the catalog has grown into a deep custom-shop operation where most builds are individually specified rather than spec-built.

A Chicago fixture in Lakeview, Chicago Music Exchange has spent a quarter-century as one of the country's premier vintage-and-new guitar destinations, staffed by players and technicians who relish the details. Amid a vast catalog of electrics, amps, and effects sits a serious flat-top room: unusually deep Atkin alongside Collings, Santa Cruz, and Bourgeois, with Goodall, Lowden, and Huss & Dalton rounding out the shelves.
