Ryan Guitars

US · CA · Founded 1987 · by Kevin Ryan

Ryan Guitars started as a side project in 1987. Kevin Ryan was a Southern California engineer at Northrop's Aeroscience Lab — by day he built jet fighter scale models for transonic wind tunnel testing; by evening he was prototyping his first acoustic guitar at home. The Aeroscience Lab was an unlikely setting for an acoustic-guitar reimagining, but the materials-science and precision-engineering background turned out to give Kevin a singular perspective on what the instrument could be. Each guitar he built suggested another way to push the design forward. Over the next three decades, Kevin shipped a series of innovations that became Ryan signatures and, in several cases, were widely copied by other builders. The Ryan Bevel — an integrated ergonomic armrest now common across the boutique world — is the most famous. Acoustic Flutes (sound ports oriented toward the player) project upper-harmonic detail back at the performer. Acoustic Honeycomb soundboard reinforcement adds tone while reducing weight. Laser-sculpted "EO" bracing, a spherically-arched back, a low-profile neck stabilized by a proprietary micro-adjustable truss rod, extended scale lengths for lowered tunings. None of these are traditional pre-war Martin or Gibson features; they're an engineer's catalog of small, intentional bets that the modern acoustic guitar could be better than the golden-era versions in specific, measurable ways. In 2010, Acoustic Guitar Magazine named Kevin Ryan one of the most influential builders of the previous thirty years, describing the work as "a blueprint for scores of other builders" and "a modern classic." That assessment has aged well — Ryan Bevels and bevel-inspired armrests have proliferated, and several other Ryan-pioneered details show up across the broader boutique-acoustic catalog now. The Westminster shop remains small, the build queue long, every instrument hand-built by Kevin. Each guitar is finished with abalone or wood marquetry details, custom titanium bridge pins, and a high-gloss finish that lets the engineering and the woods speak together rather than competing.
