McPherson Guitars

US · WI · Founded 2001 · by Matt McPherson

McPherson Guitars started in Sparta, Wisconsin in the late 1990s, when Matt McPherson set out to revisit the conventional acoustic guitar from the inside out. By 2001 the shop was building heirloom-quality wooden flat-tops in small numbers, hand-crafted by a team of luthiers and priced — even then — at the high end of the boutique market. Matt McPherson is also the founder and CEO of Mathews Archery, the world's leading archery company and another Sparta institution; the same engineering instincts that produce precision compound bows show up across McPherson's guitar work, from the cantilevered neck to the all-composite bridge and saddle systems. The McPherson sound has its own character. The offset asymmetrical soundhole is the visual signature — distinctive and intentional, part of the brand's identity for over two decades. The more consequential design choice is the cantilevered neck, where the fretboard extension hovers above the top instead of gluing to it. The result is a maximum vibrating top surface, strong sustain, articulate response across the frequency range, and a plugged-in voice (via the built-in LR Baggs system) that stays unusually close to the natural acoustic tone. McPherson builds are heavy compared to most boutique flat-tops, and that mass is part of the formula: tuning stability, intonation that holds across positions, and dynamic range that runs from quiet fingerstyle to full strum without losing definition. Today McPherson runs two parallel lines. The wood-body side covers the MG series (built across 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0 tier levels with progressively higher-grade wood selection) and the OM-shaped Camrielle. The newer Carbon Series — the Sable and the Touring — has become widely regarded as one of the strongest carbon-fiber acoustic guitars available, and serves a real player need around durability and low-maintenance performance. Tonewood Atlas focuses on hand-selected wood instruments, so we track the wood-body MG and Camrielle lines at the upper tiers and leave the Carbon Series to McPherson's own catalog and dedicated reviews. McPherson guitars circulate through a small set of boutique dealers in the United States, with the upper-tier wood builds available through direct order and select consignment.
